Renamo threatens to split the country

Manuel Bissopo, the Secretary-General of the major opposition party, Renamo – a traditional foe of the ruling Frelimo since independence -, has stated that his party may divide the country in two by force in case demands over parity within the defense and security forces go unanswered.

“If Frelimo keeps rejecting parity, Renamo and party’s leader Afonso Dhlakama have nothing else to do other than accepting what Frelimo wants, which is to create conditions for the country’s split”.

This is the second time that Renamo has made this threat. In the aftermath of the 1999 elections, Afonso Dhlakama stated its intention to divide the country across the Save river due to perceived fraud in the electoral results.
